WESTLAND — From 2:30pm – 4:30pm today, Glenn Anderson hosted the opening of a new campaign office in Westland that will serve as a base of operations for voter communication as he seeks election to the new 13th Congressional district. The office is located at 5854 N. Wayne Rd., Westland MI 48185. Over seventy volunteers arrived for the launch of the new office.

“I am always impressed by the enthusiasm of the people of the 13th Congressional District,” said Glenn Anderson. “We have had overwhelming positive feedback from those I’ll represent and today’s turnout is just another example proving that the people of these communities are ready for a change in their Congressional representation.”

Campaign volunteers and guests enjoyed food and drinks and learned about the campaign while speaking with Senator Anderson and his campaign staff. They also had an opportunity to request yard signs, bumper stickers, and e-mail updates from the campaign. Citizens from every community in the new 13th district attended the event.

“I have a clear path to victory, where I will emerge from this race as the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District,” Anderson told the crowd. “With strong grassroots support from volunteers like you, we will get my positive message out to the voters of the 13th district.”

The event didn’t end without a call to action, however.

Shortly after the scheduled end of the event, Anderson informed the crowd, “It’s time to start phone banking!”

WESTLAND — The field is set and six Democratic candidates are in the race for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. State Senator Glenn Anderson (D-Westland) filed almost double the required 1,000 signatures early last week, and was followed by five other candidates to become the Congressman in the new 13th District. Because of redistricting, there is no incumbent for Michigan’s new 13th District.  Congressman John Conyers who is seeking the seat currently represents only one third of the new district, but is not registered as living within the boundaries of the new Congressional seat.  Anderson filed over a week before the deadline thanks to overwhelming support from throughout the district.  Combined with the largest number of local elected officials’ endorsements of any candidate and a strong fundraising effort, Anderson is uniquely positioned to win the 13th District’s Democratic primary.

With the new district, the field is wide open and Senator Anderson has a clear path to win the crowded primary. A poll conducted by Harstad Strategic Research shows that for those that know both Senator Anderson and Congressman Conyers, Anderson leads by a margin of 52% - 21%. Anderson is primed to defeat Conyers, having a history of running energetic and professional campaigns and boasting strong grassroots support.  The same poll shows Anderson holding an overwhelming lead over the other candidates in the race in both name recognition and favorability.

“The support that my campaign has received thus far clearly shows the desire of the people of the new 13th District to find a new voice to represent them.  Citizens all across the district are looking for the same thing, someone who will stand up for the everyday working man and woman,” said Anderson.  “The people of the New 13th District need a NEW voice in Congress who will be of high ethical standards, accountable to them and address their needs.  I will bring new energy, commitment and accountability to this office that has been lacking for many years.”

Anderson’s priorities for Michigan include strengthening the auto and manufacturing industry and bringing jobs back to Southeast Michigan. He also has a strong record of supporting anti-bullying legislation and education. One of the hallmarks of his tenure has been a highly responsive constituent service program and he plans to repeat this responsive and accessible program in Congress.

“This campaign is about jobs and standing up for those who do not have a voice.  My vision for the 13th District will help everyone prosper, and my #1 priority will always be to bring jobs to Metro Detroit,” Anderson said.

WESTLAND — After building a strong foundation for his campaign, State Senator Glenn
Anderson has seen contributions flow in from all areas of the 13th District, with virtually
every contribution coming from an individual. The Anderson campaign has also built off of
their strong start to garner over 59 endorsements from local elected officials.

Focusing on individual contributions rather than corporate donations has allowed the
Anderson campaign to put together a strong grassroots team that has been building
support throughout the district. Anderson’s campaign was able to more than double the
total number of individuals that have donated to his campaign this quarter. Since Anderson announced his candidacy, he has received contributions from by far the largest number of individual donors of the candidates running for Congress in the 13th District. For the quarter, Anderson brought in $69,414.57 with 237 new donors, bringing his fundraising total to $134,277.97. His campaign has $74,468.04 on hand. In the four short months since declaring for the race, Anderson has raised almost as much from individuals as sitting Congressman John Conyers has in over a full year.

“We have had tremendous support from people throughout the district. Whether
volunteering time for the campaign, communicating our message through their personal
contacts, or donating directly to the campaign, we have had an enormous amount of
support pour in over the past four months,” Anderson said. “I am inspired by the people
I meet every day, and understand the struggles they are going through because they have
not had an advocate for them in Congress. It is time for this district to have a Congressman that will make it a priority to fight for the middle-class who are the backbone of this country.”

The Anderson campaign has heard from throughout the district that a new voice is needed in Washington. “I have lived in this new 13th District for the past 34 years and still do," said Anderson. "I have worked right alongside the everyday working men and women in the 13th District for almost 30 years, and it is clear that others are out of touch with the realities that most residents of the new district have to deal with.”

LANSING – Senator Glenn S. Anderson joined with the Coalition for Secure Retirement at the state capitol today to call attention to the most recent legislative attempt at eroding the middle class in Michigan. Anderson and the retirees spoke out against Senate Bill 1040, which would put current and already retired educators on the hook for pension costs.

“Last year Governor Snyder and legislative leaders built their entire budget on raising taxes for seniors and working families, and drastically cutting funding for public education” said Anderson. “This year, as school districts struggle to balance budgets after the cuts, the only thing Republicans think to do is dip further into the paychecks of our educators and retirees.”

Senate Bill 1040 would require educators to significantly increase their pension contributions or face the penalty of a decreased retirement multiplier upon retirement, would cap maximum compensation amounts, raise the retirement age for educators and decrease the amount of health coverage covered by the state. It is expected this legislation will be rushed through the legislative process, despite widespread opposition. Republican sponsors also included an appropriation in the bill that would block citizens from using a petition drive to reverse this action. This is a tactic they are using more and more frequently to stymie voters from using their constitutional right to petition for a ballot referendum to reverse unpopular actions of the legislature.

Elaine Miller, a retired Redford Union educator and 1990 WDIV Newsweek Teacher of the Year, joined the press conference and commented, “I am enraged by the endless stream of attacks on public educators from Lansing. The message that the Republicans are sending is ‘We don’t care about having good public teachers educating our children.’ It makes me wonder if they care about the kids themselves.”

“How can the public education talent pool in Michigan expect to attract and retain those best and brightest when all they see is a devaluing of teachers through this relentless attack from Lansing?” Senator Anderson remarked. “They demand our educators take on one of the most important jobs in Michigan out of one side of their mouths and ask them to give up their own future financial stability out of the other.”

LANSING – Senator Glenn S. Anderson issued a video statement today asking Michigan citizens to share their stories via e-mail or mail of how breast and cervical cancer have affected their lives. The stories will be used as part of an effort to encourage action on bi-partisan legislation he introduced to create a “Pink Ribbon” license plate. Anderson intends to deliver the letters and emails to his colleagues in the Senate on Mother’s Day.

“It is past time to take action on this legislation,” said Anderson. “To help encourage my colleagues to give the pink plate bill a vote, I am asking Michigan residents to get involved. My hope is that through their stories, we can convince other members of the Senate to take action on this legislation, which would provide funding for breast and cervical cancer screening without costing the state of Michigan a cent.”

The legislation, which was co-sponsored by every member of the 38-member State Senate, has sat without action since May of 2011. Funds raised by the license plate would help prevent breast and cervical cancer by helping low-income women afford screening and treatment and would serve as a statewide reminder for cancer patients and survivors that they are not alone. Further, all of the startup costs for creating the license plate have been raised by Senator Anderson through private donations, meaning there would be no impact on the state budget for creating the plate.

“This shouldn’t be a political issue,” Senator Anderson said. “We could pass this legislation and start saving lives. We will send a message by sharing the stories of Michigan citizens who have directly experienced these devastating diseases that the time to pass this legislation has come.”

To view the video, visit: www.MIPinkPlate.com. Letters should be mailed to State Senator Glenn S. Anderson, P.O. Box 30036, Lansing, MI 48909. E-mails should include “Pink Plate Story” in the subject line, and should be sent to SenatorAnderson@Senate.Michigan.Gov.

WESTLAND — After announcing his candidacy for the 13th Congressional District in Michigan at the end of October, State Senator Glenn Anderson has seen a wave of support flow into his campaign in a short amount of time.  The Anderson campaign is off to a very aggressive start, garnering over 45 endorsements from local elected officials.

With just a few weeks of actual fundraising, inside the holiday season, Anderson’s campaign was able to bring in $64,413.40 from 127 contributions, and still has over $56,000 on hand.  The Anderson campaign finished this quarter with the largest amount of individual contributions, with over $63,000 in total, a strong indication of his fundraising ability and the demand for responsive representation in the 13th District.

“These numbers show that our campaign will be aggressive and I have the ability to win,” Anderson said.  “I want to give the residents of the 13th District a voice that will speak loud and clear on their behalf in Congress, and based on the amount of support my campaign has seen in such a short period of time, I’m confident that we will have the opportunity to do just that.”

With a competitive race already well underway, Anderson has moved quickly to garner support from throughout the 13th District. With overwhelming support from local and state officials, the campaign has been bolstered by a large number of community leaders.  “The amount of encouragement that I have received since announcing my bid for Congress has been overwhelming,” Anderson said.

Due to redistricting, the 13th District has drawn five candidates to the August 7 primary election, and clearly favors Anderson.  Senator Anderson stands out as the only candidate with both local and state level experience. On Tuesday, the President delivered a strong and inspiring message for America: we must stand united if we are to build a future that is to last for everyone. Now that the dust has settled, we must rely on Congress to put the President's words into action and pass the legislation to make his vision possible.

Congress is in a state of perpetual gridlock, with continuous partisan bickering and parliamentary procedure blocking even the smallest action. It is not surprising that Republicans are trying to impede the President, however you would imagine that Democrats would passionately work to pass his agenda. Unfortunately, even members of the President's own party spoke out against hallmark initiatives like the Obama health care bill.

Our President needs strong and capable partners in Congress that will stand up for what's right and advance policies that are vital to our nation's future economic success. Mine will be a voice in Congress that promotes the kinds of policies that will make the Detroit region's economic turnaround possible. I will fight for what’s right, not just what’s easy.

At the same time, Congress must be pragmatic. Too often we see bills that are introduced and given hearings in committees that end up dead on arrival before they are given a vote. Congress needs to focus on achievable goals that both sides can agree on like equal pay, ending tax credits to companies that send jobs overseas, and engage in some nation-building right here in Michigan.

The President’s speech exemplified the type of bold leadership that we sent our elected officials to Washington to provide, and our elected leaders must work together if our country is to enjoy a new era of economic prosperity.

Glenn Anderson is a Michigan State Senator who is currently a candidate for Congress in Michigan's 13th Congressional District, covering Detroit, Redford, Westland, Garden City, Inkster, Dearborn Heights, Romulus, Wayne, Melvindale, Ecorse, and River Rouge.

Ever hear the phrase, Just Google it?

If a bill that is currently before the U.S. Congress becomes law, Google, Wikipedia and other internet sites will be limited in what they can provide to those searching the internet. It could also limit freedom of speech by restricting what blogs and others may say on the internet. Experts say it will negatively impact job creation and cast a cloud of fear over internet companies. SOPA, (Stop Online Piracy Act), is supposed to stop online piracy but in reality it would grant huge corporations extraordinary and unchecked power of censorship over the internet.

SOPA is sponsored by Republican Congressman Lamar Smith of Texas, who is backed by many powerful special interest groups, including CEOs who are also among the top donors to his 2012 campaign. Unfortunately, Michigan Congressman John Conyers has co-sponsored and been a vocal supporter of this dangerous legislation. I believe Congress should not be limiting our freedoms by passing legislation like SOPA. Intellectual property rights should be protected, but the legislation as currently written is far too broad and would be harmful. We cannot allow these special interests to bully and buy their agenda through Congress without regard for individual freedoms and innovation. This is just the sort of thing I will oppose as the next Congressman for the 13th District in Michigan. I will not stand for such a misuse of our legislative process. If you agree I’d urge you to join me.

The growing online information exchange has enriched our world, allowed people to share and learn from one another, and encouraged economic growth on the internet. This bill jeopardizes the internet’s record of innovation and job creation, something we cannot afford in today’s economy.

Many websites are planning a blackout today in protest of SOPA.  We need to stand united for our freedom as Americans along with online providers like Wikipedia, Google and Facebook to protest this bill, and send a clear message that we stand behind job creation and innovations online that cannot be sacrificed.

Don’t allow Congress to censor your internet. Please stand with me in opposing SOPA by contacting your member of Congress today. Let them know that we treasure our freedom in America and we won’t tolerate attempts to enact restrictions that limit our ability to search for information or use the internet as an extension of our freedom of speech.  Tell them this is contrary to what our nation stands for both at home and abroad and while totalitarian or communist governments may take such steps, we won’t allow it.

WAYNE – State Senator Glenn S. Anderson, who currently represents Michigan’s 6th State Senate District, formally announced today that he will seek election to Michigan’s 13th Congressional District in November 2012. He made the announcement across from the Ford Assembly complex in the city of Wayne that produces the Ford Focus.

“This is where I started my working life 39 years ago when I became a member of the UAW building American vehicles,” Glenn Anderson said. “For 54 years, thousands of workers here have received a good wage, health care and have been able to provide for their families with a better future. In turn that has allowed them to buy homes and cars and put their kids through college. Today, that future is under attack from all sides and I am deeply concerned that our leaders aren’t doing enough to turn things around.”
A large number of supporters, including Mayors, City Council-members, and County Commissioners, gathered to hear Anderson announce his intentions to run.

“Those who know me know that throughout my time in public service I have fought passionately for the communities that I represent,” Anderson said. “I will continue to vigorously advocate for all the people I represent in the 113th Congress and my office will set a new bar for constituent service.” Following his announcement in Wayne, Senator Anderson made a second announcement in Detroit at TechTown.

Created by the most recent redistricting process, the 13th Congressional district includes part of Detroit and Dearborn Heights and the entirety of River Rouge, Ecorse, Melvindale, Redford, Westland, Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, and Romulus. Anderson currently represents all of Westland, Garden City and Redford, which comprise almost 1/3 of the primary voters in the new district.
